The VMware exit report

New in the next release

This is on the dev builds now, and in the next release.

One printable page for a client deciding whether to leave vSphere. It's built from the newest inventory and the licenses vCenter holds, so it asks vCenter nothing new. It needs a Business or MSP license.

What it covers:

  • Renewal under per-core licensing: every ESXi host's CPUs and cores, and what each needs licensed now that vSphere is sold per core with every CPU counted as at least 16 cores. Give a price per core and it shows a yearly figure.
  • Licenses held now: product, edition, how many units are used, and when each expires. Keys are shown by their last group only.
  • Clear up before moving: VMs that are powered off, snapshots, disk files no VM uses, and templates.
  • VMs that need care on the way: snapshots to remove first, independent disks to copy on their own, VMs that boot UEFI, and Windows guests that need VirtIO drivers.
  • What it takes to run elsewhere: the vCPU, memory and disk the VMs hold, and how many hosts like your largest would carry it with one spare, at the vCPU and memory ratios set for capacity planning. This is a first estimate from what is allocated, not from measured use.

Making one

On the Virtualization tab, under Inventory, open VMware exit report. Fill in who it's for and a price per core a year, both optional, and choose Open the report. Print it, or save it as PDF from the browser's print dialog.

Prepared by comes from CAPACITY_SUMMARY_BY, as on the monthly capacity summary. Untick Say it was made with Collimo to send it under your own name only.

The report is also at /api/report/vmware-exit, with for=, price=, credit=0 and download=1.
